On pourra + personnalisé l'UI PC !
Hi all,
based on additional questions asked above, I have created the following Q and A.
Do the combat game designers play the game? How are new abilities/items tested?
We currently have two full time employees dealing full time with combat design, with one of them having more of a focus on PvP and the other more of a focus on PvE. We are supported by strong PvP focussed guilds and do regular internal and NDA-tests in addition to using the test server. Having said that, the abilities and items in Albion Online are still heavily changed, with lots of new stuff still being added regularly. It is much harder to instantly balance the introduction of 20 new spells than to just tweak what is already there. If you compare Albion Online with a game such as League of Legends or Dota 2, and compare the pace at which we are currently releasing new items and abilities with theirs, it is very easy to see why they have a much easier time with balancing stuff than we do. We have stated many times that we are using the beta test for actually testing the game - it is not a semi-release that happens to be called “beta”. We take an agile approach to development and balancing as this means that we will be able to progress much much faster. If you take the current armor rework, even if some things are imbalanced right now, I am certain that we will have dealt with most of the issues over the course of the next 4-6 weeks.
Why do you not wipe the game right now to generate extra traffic? When will be the next wipe?
Given that you make substantial changes to items and abilities during the beta test, could you not give a refund or bonus to LP for those players seeking to re-spec?
We could, but it would involve extra development time just spent on this, and then, it would also create weird results - what happens, for example, if I am highly skilled in a weapon line that apparently gets buffed? Will I still get extra LP on top? In addition to that, progress speed right now is quite fast - and faster than it will be on release. I can of course understand that if you are very competitive, and your highest leveled weapon gets changed/nerfed, possibly 10 hours before an important GvG fight, it sucks. But then again, we are still in Beta and we intent to make the best use of it. If we treated the beta phase as if the game was already released, it would seriously slow us down. Our main goal, as stated many times, is for Albion Online to be a long term success, and this means that the short term sometimes has to take a hit.
Are you concerned about players taking a break from the game right now, or even quitting?
Of course we are sad about every single player who quits the game without the intention of coming back. We are however fine with people taking a break or taking it easy while the game is still in beta. As said above, our “beta” is a real one - it’s not a differently named release as it is done in many other games. We have been open and honest about this at all times. As stated above, we have a long term vision for a game, and the time for us to really start worrying about population numbers is when the game is released, and no further wipes are planned. The time until then, we will fully focus on creating the best game that we possibly can, without being driven or scared by short termism.
What is your stance and policy on casual vs hardcore? Will the game be overly focused on casual players?
For a hardcore sandbox PvP based MMORPG to work, it needs to create a symbiotic relationship between casual and hardcore players. Please see "Hardcore" vs "Casual" Debate - Our Stance
How do you think a reputation/crime system will improve the PvP experience?
Using a crime and reputation system, we want to make yellow and red zones more focussed on small scale PvP, with more opportunities for smaller groups and solo players to make a living too, whereas in return, we will drastically expand the black zones and optimize them for group and guild based PvP and GvG fights. Details will follow in a future dev blog.
There are some ways to gain an advantage in GvG by gaming the system using alt guilds. Are you aware of this and are you planning to solve this?
We are aware of these and other issues with the GvG system and are actively looking into and researching ways to address them. We have previously shared some ideas with the community, with mixed results, and have not yet found a solution that we are fully happy with yet. We do have an internal interation that looks promising though and that we will share with you to collect feedback before we start working on it.
Why did you create the forum PvP section - given that it is mostly using for banter/trolling? Why did it replace guild discussion?
We believe that “forum PvP” is somewhat a part of games such as Albion Online, it adds to the rivalry and creates good reads now and then. Having said that, it probably does make sense to have a seperate forum for mature guild discussion, too. We will discuss this internally and get back to you.
What release date are you aiming for?
We have announced that the closed beta will run until at least August 1st 2016. We are currently aiming to release the game shortly thereafter, and while we cannot pinpoint an exact date yet, we do currently think that we can stick to that plan. As always, everything is subject to change, and we will be able to give a better response the closer we get to the date mentioned above.
How was the player activity over the past month?
We are very happy with the overall player activity, it is more than sufficient for running a successful beta test. We are of course aware that there is a decline of activity as the beta goes on, in particular given that there is a wipe looming and there is a long list of improvements that will be made to the game prior to release.
How far off is the current of the game from your ideal game?
Far off - and hopefully, it will still be far off years down the road, as we plan to expand and improve Albion Online consistently. Once you think the game is “perfect” it means that it will stagnate, which usually is not a good thing.
Is your long term vision for Albion Online still open world, full loot, hardcore sandbox MMORPG?
Yes
How often do you plan to release content updates once the game is released?
That’s too early to tell, as our current focus is getting the game release ready. We have however no plans whatsoever to reduce man power or effort after release of the game. Again, we have a long term vision for Albion Online, and our dream outcome would be a successful release following by an organic and steady growth of the game - quality wise and population wise.
When the game world is made bigger, will individual clusters be made bigger too?
Will confirm with the map team tomorrow, however, if I am not mistaken, we intend to make all clusters the size of the current biggest clusters, which are the black zone ones.
Will there be an API for players/guilds to use?
Yes, and we are planning to roll it our soon, i.e. prior to release.
What is your ideal distribution of non-pvp, pvp limited and free pvp zones?
I believe that this is impossible to determine in a top-down manner. Sandbox game worlds evolve organically and on top of that, we are currently making substantial changes to game world. What we will do there is substantially increased the number of black zones, though, also relative to other zone types. There will also be “lower tier” black zones, which are similar to red zones, however, with the difference that they are fully “lawless”, with no crime and reputation system.
How much money has Sandbox Interactive made? How much money do you guys plan to fund the rest of development?
I cannot share details about our financials, however, what I can say is this: the development process - thanks to our founders! - is well-funded - no more, no less, i.e. nobody has gotten rich either. As stated many times, our focus for Albion Online is for the long term.
